D2 Rim Technology

Shimano's D2 rim profile was refined through extensive wind tunnel testing and real-world road development. The wide rim shape with a deep tyre bed reduces aerodynamic drag across yaw angles from 0 to 15 degrees, outperforming traditional aero rim shapes in the conditions riders actually encounter. The D2 profile also boosts lateral stiffness and improves vertical compliance, translating into a wheel that is both faster and more comfortable over rough roads.

OPTBAL Spoke System & Direct Engagement Hub

The rear wheel uses Shimano's OPTBAL 2:1 asymmetric lacing — 16 spokes on the drive side, 8 on the non-drive side — to counteract the inherent tension imbalance caused by cassette placement. This balanced tension increases stiffness, stability, and long-term durability. Paired with the new Direct Engagement freehub mechanism, the R9270 hub delivers crisp, immediate power transfer with every pedal stroke. The aluminium freehub body accepts Shimano 12-speed HG12-L2 Road cassettes exclusively.

Compatibility & Fit

Designed for Shimano 12-speed road groupsets. Requires Shimano HG12-L2 Road cassettes (12-speed only — 11-speed cassettes are not compatible). Mounts to frames with 12x100mm front and 12x142mm rear thru-axle dropouts. Disc brake only; rotor mounting uses the Center Lock interface (rotor sold separately). Tubeless-ready; compatible with 25–32mm tyres. Tyre width of 26–30mm is aerodynamically optimal.
