The Shimano CUES ST-U4030-L is the left-hand half of Shimano's first hydraulic 9-speed drop-bar lever set, with a lever shape borrowed from the 105 series. It handles front shifting on a 2x CUES drivetrain and gives you the light, consistent feel of a hydraulic disc brake, all in a single unit built for everyday road and gravel bikes.

Control that fits your hands

Shimano reworked the bracket and lever position on the U4030 after studying different hand shapes, so the brake lever sits closer to the bar and is easier to reach from the hoods or the drops. Reach adjust then fine-tunes that distance to suit you.

Hydraulic braking, simple front shifting

A hydraulic system gives lighter lever effort, better modulation and no cable friction to maintain. The lever ships with a straight-joint SM-BH59 hose kit and uses Shimano mineral oil, and its funnel bleeding port keeps set-up and servicing straightforward. The two-position front shift moves cleanly between chainrings.

Compatibility & fit

This is the left-hand lever. In the standard Australian set-up the left lever operates the rear brake and controls the front derailleur on a 2x Shimano CUES drivetrain; pair it with a CUES double front derailleur such as the FD-U6030-F. Shimano's recommended caliper is the BR-U6030 flat-mount hydraulic disc brake, sold separately. Clamps to 23.8–24.2 mm drop handlebars. Match it with the ST-U4030-R right lever for 9-speed rear shifting. Not for 1x drivetrains (use the BL-U4030-L brake-only lever instead) and not compatible with mechanical (cable) disc brake calipers.
