EP8 Motor Technology

The DU-EP800 uses an all-new magnesium casing that slashes weight while keeping the motor rigid and protected. Shimano's refined motor internals reduce pedalling drag noticeably compared to older STEPS units, giving a more natural free-wheeling feel when the assist is off. In Boost mode, the EP8 achieves full 85Nm output with just 20Nm of rider input torque — ideal for steep, technical climbs. Trail mode delivers peak power progressively, making descents and mixed-terrain riding feel intuitive and controlled.

E-TUBE PROJECT Customisation

Using the Shimano E-TUBE PROJECT app (connected wirelessly via the SC-EM800 cycle computer), you can independently tune the Eco, Trail and Boost modes across three parameters each. Store two complete motor profiles and switch between them while riding to match the trail conditions. The EP8 pairs with Shimano STEPS batteries (BT-E8016 630Wh, BT-E8036 630Wh, BT-E8035-L 504Wh) and supports both mechanical shifting (9/10/11/12-speed) and Di2 electronic groupsets.

Compatibility & Fit

The DU-EP800 uses the same frame mount pattern as the DU-E8000 and DU-7000, making it compatible with a broad range of existing e-MTB frames. Dedicated EP8 cranks are required (available in 160mm, 165mm, 170mm and 175mm). Q-factor is 177mm. The included TL-EW300 plug tool is designed specifically for EW-SD300 cables used in 12-speed Di2 and STEPS systems — note it is not compatible with the thicker EW-SD50 cables.
