Chainrings wear out, and the usual choice is a light alloy ring that wears fast or a durable steel ring that more than doubles the weight. Race Face's Era chainring splits the ring into three bonded parts, each in the best material for the job, and is expected to last five times as long as a typical alloy ring.

Three materials, one ring

Race Face chose stainless steel for the teeth because a ring with higher yield strength wears longer. By Race Face's figures its stainless steel is rated at 1300 MPa, against 900 MPa for Grade 5 titanium and 475 MPa for its 7000-series aluminium chainrings. The carbon fibre spider holds it all together without the weight, and the proven aluminium interface bolts on with CINCH.

Choosing a tooth profile

SHI-12 is for Shimano 12-speed HG+ chains only. NW is for other modern 10, 11 and 12-speed chains.

Compatibility & fit

Era chainrings fit CINCH direct mount cranks. With an RF136 spindle, the DM ring gives a 52mm chainline (3mm offset) and the DMW (Direct Mount Wide) ring gives 55mm (0mm offset). Chainline also depends on the crank's spindle, so check what your frame and drivetrain need. Ring fitting is a workshop service at Tune Cycles, separate from the ring itself.
