Carbon Rim Engineering

The WH-M9220 rim is shaped around real-world enduro demands. At 30mm internal width, it supports modern wide trail tyres between 2.3" and 2.6", filling out the casing for better cornering support and puncture resistance. The hookless bead profile — reinforced to 4mm at the critical strike zone — is engineered to spread impact loads rather than concentrate them, reducing the risk of catastrophic failure on rock strikes. At just 19.7mm deep, the rim stays compliant vertically, taking the edge off sharp trail chatter without adding unnecessary rotational mass.

XTR Hub Performance

The front hub uses stainless steel cartridge bearings behind optimised labyrinth and contact seals — a dual-layer defence against trail mud, water, and grit. Adjustable bearing preload lets you fine-tune rolling feel as bearings bed in and keeps the hub running consistently over the long term. The 15mm E-THRU axle system delivers a measurably stiffer front end compared to older 9mm QR designs, translating to more precise steering feedback through technical terrain and better brake track alignment under hard braking.

Serviceability & Setup

Shimano designed the WH-M9220 with the paddock in mind: J-bend spokes can be replaced with standard workshop tools, cartridge bearings swap out without specialist presses, and the Centerlock rotor interface means rotor changes take seconds. Tubeless rim tape is included, and the rim is compatible with the Shimano wedge-style tubeless valve lock ring. The wheel is sold as a front individual unit, making it easy to replace or upgrade a single end of your current build.
