Hollowtech II Technology

Shimano's Hollowtech II system integrates the crankset spindle directly into the right-hand crank arm, eliminating weight and flex at the axle interface. The 24mm spindle threads through shell-mounted bearings, separating them as wide as possible for maximum lateral rigidity. The result is a crankset that feels planted and responsive whether you are sprinting, climbing, or grinding out long kilometres on the road.

Construction & Materials

Crank arms are hollow-forged aluminium. The outer chainring uses carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) elements for weight savings, while the inner chainring is aluminium throughout. At 681g for the 52/36T build, the FC-R8000 sits well clear of the entry-level bracket. Q-factor of 146mm is consistent with a natural road cycling stance and in line with the broader Ultegra groupset.

Compatibility & Fit

Designed for Shimano 11-speed road drivetrains. Compatible with Shimano HG-EV 11-speed and HG-X11 chains. Requires a Hollowtech II-compatible bottom bracket — Shimano recommends the SM-BBR60 (BSA 68mm or 73mm shell; sold separately, not included). Not compatible with 12-speed Shimano drivetrains.
