The wider calliper body houses four pistons that push opposing pads simultaneously, increasing friction surface area for stronger, more consistent braking — especially valuable on long descents where heat build-up can challenge 2-piston designs. Shimano's SERVOWAVE geometry in the BL-M7100 lever maps lever travel non-linearly: early movement is quick to take up slack, then mechanical advantage increases progressively as the pads bite, giving the rider nuanced control rather than an on-off feel.

The BL-M7100 lever body uses an aluminium blade with a 22.2mm clamp band. Brake fluid is Shimano Mineral Oil, which is non-corrosive and gentle on painted frames. The calliper mounts via a standard post mount interface and includes N03A-RF resin pads with fins (SA-spec variant). The 1700mm pre-bled hose is sized for rear installation on full-suspension and hardtail trail bikes.
