Carbon Rim & Spoke Engineering

The C60 rim is moulded from high-grade carbon composite, chosen by Shimano for its exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio and natural road vibration damping. At 60mm deep, it sits in the sweet spot for all-round aerodynamics on open roads and in criteriums. The rim outer width is 28mm, accommodating tubular tyres from 25mm to 32mm. To handle the higher spoke tensions demanded by the HR hub geometry, Shimano upgraded spoke diameter to 1.8mm (versus 1.5mm on the standard C60) — bladed and double-butted to remain aerodynamic without adding unnecessary mass.

OPTBAL Spoke System & HR Hub

The rear hub uses Shimano's OPTBAL (Optimised Balance) lacing — 14 spokes on the drive side and 7 on the non-drive side. This 2:1 ratio equalises spoke tension across both flanges, reducing the chronic imbalance that plagues conventional rear wheel builds. Combined with the HR hub's wider flange geometry, the result is a rear wheel that resists lateral flex under sprint loads and tracks precisely through tight corners. The Direct Engagement freehub removes the traditional spring-loaded ratchet delay, putting power to the road the instant you push on the pedals.

Compatibility & Fit

Designed for 700C rim brake road frames with a standard quick-release 130mm rear spacing. The Shimano HG Spline L2 freehub body is compatible with Shimano 12-speed road cassettes including the CS-R9200 (Dura-Ace) and CS-R8100 (Ultegra). Not compatible with 11-speed or older cassettes. Tubular tyres only — 25mm to 32mm recommended width. Cup-and-cone bearings with contact seals for long service life and field-adjustable preload.
