Design & Construction
The FC-R9100 features a redesigned driveside arm positioned closer to the chainring to maximise lateral stiffness without adding weight. The large chainring combines anodised aluminium with a CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced polymer) composite bond, delivering a 7g saving over the previous generation while maintaining rigidity under hard efforts. The small ring is lightweight anodised aluminium, offset slightly inboard for cleaner chain drop and front derailleur compatibility. Both chainrings use the Hollowglide tooth profile, engineered for precise, low-effort shifting with 11-speed chains.
Hollowglide Chainring Technology
Shimano's Hollowglide chainrings feature a refined tooth profile designed specifically for 11-speed road drivetrains. The tooth geometry accelerates chain pickup on upshifts and eases release on downshifts, reducing shift effort and noise throughout the cassette range. The 52-36T combination suits road racing and fast sportive riding, providing a wide enough range for varied terrain without compromising top-end speed.
Compatibility & Fit
The FC-R9100 uses Shimano's Hollowtech II 24mm spindle system and requires an external bottom bracket (not included). Compatible bottom brackets include the Shimano BB-R9100 (threaded) or SM-BB92-41B (PressFit 41mm shell). Designed for use with the FD-R9100 front derailleur. Optimised for Shimano HG-EV and HG-X11 11-speed chains. Chainline: 43.5mm.
