Many bikes purchased ~2010 were delivered with a front derailleur in 2x10 or 3x9 gear combinations.  Since then cassette ratios have grown drasticaly and the front derailleur has been eliminated on most MTB bikes.

With quality MTBs in short supply (and very expensive) installing a 1x upgrade kit is a great way to refresh the bike and get back on the trails.
