Internal Gear Technology

The Alfine 11 uses a three-stage planetary gear system with four roller clutches and three selectively-locked sun pinions — delivering 11 near-evenly-spaced ratios across a 409% range (0.527 to 2.153). Step increments of approximately 13–14% between most gears give the Alfine the kind of usable spread typically associated with wide-range cassette drivetrains, without any exposed moving parts.

Oil-Bath Lubrication

Unlike grease-packed internals, the Alfine 11 runs in an oil bath, reducing friction and extending maintenance intervals significantly. Shimano recommends using genuine Alfine hub oil (SG-S700) to maintain warranty coverage and ensure proper seal function. The accessible oil port makes top-ups straightforward at home or in the workshop.

Centre Lock Disc Mount

The spline-mount Centre Lock system allows quick, accurate disc rotor fitting with a lockring — the same standard used across Shimano's road, gravel, and mountain disc groupsets. This reduces installation time and improves rotor rigidity and braking consistency compared to 6-bolt mounts.

Compatibility & Fit

Designed for 135mm bolt-on rear dropout spacing with a 187mm overall axle length. Accepts Nexus-compatible cogs (3-lug, 16 teeth or more). Chain line is 41.8mm. Compatible with standard derailleur-type chains. Requires a separate small parts kit (shifter, cog, snap ring, axle nuts, non-turn washers, and cassette joint not included). Compatible with Centre Lock disc rotors from Shimano and other manufacturers using the Shimano lockring standard.
