Pedal washers sit between the pedal axle and the crank arm. They protect the face of the crank and help stop the pedal creaking or working loose.

The 9/16" hole suits 9/16" pedal axles, the standard on three-piece cranks.

Fit the washer over the pedal thread before screwing the pedal into the crank. Grease the thread and tighten the pedal properly; the left pedal has a reverse thread, so it tightens anticlockwise. Washers are cheap, so it's worth fitting fresh ones whenever you change pedals, and a bag of 10 covers several pairs, which makes it a handy thing to keep in the workshop drawer. They're a small part that stops a lot of creaks.
