Reach and leverage

The long handle puts more force through the pedal flats than a standard spanner, which matters most when removing pedals that have bedded in. The offset head helps keep your knuckles clear of the chainring while you work.

When it's time to refit, the 3/8-inch square hole lets you drive the 33S1 with a torque wrench, so you can tighten to the pedal maker's figure and avoid damaging the threads.

A quick tip

Pedal threads loosen towards the back of the bike on both sides: the left pedal is reverse-threaded. Grease the threads before refitting.
