Shimano's D2 rim profile is designed to reduce aerodynamic drag across the yaw angles most commonly encountered in real-world riding. Twenty-four straight-pull bladed stainless steel spokes are laced in Shimano's OPTBAL pattern — a 2:1 asymmetric arrangement with spokes distributed to equalise tension across the drive and non-drive sides, resulting in a laterally stiffer and more fatigue-resistant rear wheel.

Hub & Axle

The Ultegra R8170 rear hub uses Shimano's proven cup-and-cone bearing system with CBN-coated contact surfaces for long service life. The 12mm E-Thru thru-axle interface (142mm rear spacing) delivers substantially greater torsional and transverse stiffness compared to quick-release designs. Rotor mounting uses the Centre Lock spline system, making disc rotor swaps simple and precise with a standard lockring tool.

Compatibility & Fit

This wheel is designed for 700c road disc brake frames with 12×142mm thru-axle dropouts. The HG-EV freehub body accepts Shimano 11-speed (HG) and 12-speed road cassettes, including CS-R9200-12, CS-R8100-12, CS-R8000-11, and CS-HG800-11. Recommended tyre width is 25–32mm (tubeless or clincher). A Centre Lock rotor adaptor (sold separately) is required for 6-bolt frames. Not compatible with SRAM XDR or Campagnolo cassettes.
