Design & Technology

The R8020 generation of Shimano's Ultegra STI levers was engineered to bring hydraulic disc braking to road-disc builds while retaining familiar mechanical shifting. The lever body integrates the hydraulic master cylinder within the hood, with the brake hose exiting cleanly through the bar tape area. Shift cables route conventionally to a front derailleur, keeping the drivetrain compatible with any 11-speed Shimano road cassette and rear derailleur. This approach suits riders upgrading from rim-brake mechanical builds as well as those specifying new road-disc bikes who prefer cable shifting.

Compatibility & Fit

Designed for 2x11-speed Shimano road drivetrains. Compatible with Shimano Ultegra R8000 and 105 R7000 front derailleurs (cable-operated) and any 11-speed Shimano road rear derailleur. Hydraulic brake circuit requires a compatible flat-mount or post-mount disc caliper (e.g. BR-R8070) and Shimano SM-BH90 brake hose with BH90 olive and insert. Mineral oil only — do not use DOT fluid. Sold as a single left lever; the right lever (ST-R8020-R, 11-speed) is sold separately. In Australian riding convention, the left lever controls the rear brake.
