The DU-EP801 builds on the proven EP8 platform with upgrades focused on cadence range and acceleration. Assist is more consistent on sustained climbs, and the motor responds better at higher pedalling cadences than its predecessor. Three base modes — Eco, Trail, and Boost — can be tuned into up to 15 custom modes using the E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist app, letting riders dial in exactly how much support they want at any point in the ride.
System Integration
New CAN and ACC ports open the EP801 to a broader ecosystem of accessories and third-party integrations. The drive unit pairs natively with Shimano XT Di2 electronic shifting, enabling FREE SHIFT (gear changes while coasting) and AUTO SHIFT (automatic gear selection based on speed and cadence). Display options include the colour SC-EM800, the SC-E5003 monochrome unit, or the minimalist EW-SW310 remote with integrated LED indicator strip.
Compatibility & Fit
The DU-EP801 mid-ship position motor suits e-mountain bike frames designed around Shimano's EP8 / EP801 motor interface. It uses a 24 mm narrow-profile spindle and requires the second-generation Shimano BMS — it is not compatible with first-generation EP8 (DU-EP800) batteries. Assist is set to 25 kph in this variant, making it legal for road use in Australia and the EU under pedelec regulations. For frame compatibility, consult your bike manufacturer's Shimano EP801 specification.
Shimano warrants the STEPS DU-EP801 drive unit against defects in materials and workmanship for two years from the date of original retail purchase. Normal wear items (bearings, seals) are excluded. For warranty support, return the item to Tune Cycles.
