S.H.I.S. — what the code means

S.H.I.S. (Standard Headset Identification System) states the head tube and steerer diameters a headset needs, written as upper | lower. This headset is EC49/38.1 | EC49/40: External Cup top and bottom, a 49mm head tube, with a 38.1mm (1.5in) steerer at the top bearing and a 39.79mm crown race seat at the bottom. Matching the code exactly is what makes a headset fit.
