Choose the thread to suit your cranks: 9/16" for three-piece cranks, the standard on almost every adult bike, or 1/2" for one-piece cranks, which are common on kids' bikes, older BMX bikes and some exercise bikes. A one-piece crank is a single steel piece running through the frame; a three-piece crank has separate arms fixed to a bottom bracket axle.

To fit, grease the pedal threads, start each pedal by hand so it doesn't cross-thread, then tighten it with a pedal spanner or the hex key it takes. The left pedal has a reverse thread, so it tightens anticlockwise.
